This is an edge detail that I used on our kitchen island as well. It helps to hide the glue joint as well as softening the edges - a good thing to protect little boys heads.

The grey "panel" in this photo is a chalkboard. A local, downtown Catholic high school closed a few years ago, and one of the architectrual salvage companies saved all the slate clalkboards. I was able to buy a broken one which provided this pie

The bench seat is a large slab of maple that I harvested from a friends tree a few years ago. I took it to A&M wood in Cabridge to have them surface it on their 19" jointer and thicknesser - but did the finished surface with my A2 jointer.
